Transformer-like mobile phone

The Softbank 815T PB phone is probably the world's first robot mobile phone manufactured by a phone company. Softbank, a Japanese telco which sells the phone manufactured by Toshiba,is launching the phone in conjunction with a new Japanese television drama series entitled “Keitai Sousakan 7” or ”Cellphone Investigation 7.”

Looks
At first glance, the Softbank 815T PB looks like an ordinary clamshell phone with plastic arms and legs. Look a little close and you'll find that the arms and legs are not part of the phone. If you want a robot phone or PhoneBraver as the 815T PB is also called, you will need to glue an additional rectangular kit to the back of the clamshell phone when you unpack it from the box. The flexible robot limbs are fitted into the sides of the kit, but can be pulled out into different poses.

Artificial intelligence
But what truly makes the PhoneBraver a robot phone is its artificial intelligence capability. When in robot mode, the screen shows a face with multiple expressions and it can respond when the owner talks to it. This is due to a piece of AI software called “Buddy Talk” that is installed in the phone. It controls the phones various expressions and responds to voice conversation. It can even personlise its responses according to the user's phone logs.

For example, if a user calls a particular person many times, a text phrase such as “You’re calling her often these days, aren’t you?” might appear coming out of the face’s mouth, according to Softbank Mobile spokesman Katsuhide Furuya in response to AFP.

To see pictures of the PhoneBraver (which can actually look quite clumsy after all it is just a clamshell with arms and legs sticking out of it), follow the links appended to the official site.

Contributor's Note

News just out a few hours ago on AFP. I'm quite amazed this phone made it to the market, looks tacky. Made for kids and collectors perhaps.
