Ghana coffins come in fantastical designs
Imagine being laid out in a coffin shaped like a banana or a fish? This sounds like a surreal scene out of Dali's paintings but it is happening in Ghana. This relatively new tradition is said to originate in first half of the last century. According to BBC News, the first fantasy coffin was built by a chairmaker named Ata Owoo. He was actually making a chair in the shape of a cocoa pod for a village chief. Unfortunately, the chief died before he ever set eyes on the finished cocoa pod chair. Owoo's finished work became his coffin instead. When Owoo's apprentice's grandmother passed away, he built her an airplane for her funeral as she had never been in one before. From then on, coffins designed to look like objects became popular. This is one country where being buried in a Coca-Cola bottle or a Bible is not considered ridiculous or preposterous. The variety of designs is endless. Coffins can be shaped to look like hammers, fish, cars, mobile phones, airplanes, cadillacs, leopards, ships, canoes, cocoa beans and angels, nothing is fantastical as long as it can be dreamed up by the customer. That said, generally clients tend to want to bury their loved ones in something that reflects their trade, their interests or their unaccomplished dreams.
